Wheel Alignment Wilmington NC — Camber, Caster, Toe and Thrust
Alignment is what we’re known for. It’s in our name for a reason. At Derham’s Alignment & Auto Repair in Wilmington, NC, wheel alignment has been our core specialty since Mark Derham opened the shop in 2006 — 20 years of it now. We’ve performed thousands of alignments on everything from daily commuters to lifted trucks, and our digital alignment equipment means we can show you exactly where your vehicle started and where it ended up.
A proper alignment isn’t just about pointing the wheels forward. It’s about setting the precise angles — camber, caster, and toe — on all four wheels to match your vehicle’s factory specifications. When those angles are off, even slightly, the consequences add up fast: premature tire wear, steering pull, and unnecessary stress on suspension components that leads to bigger repairs down the road.
What Is Wheel Alignment?
Camber
Camber is the inward or outward tilt of the tire when viewed from the front of the vehicle. Negative camber means the top of the tire tilts inward; positive camber means it tilts outward. Incorrect camber causes the inner or outer edge of the tire to wear faster than the rest. Common causes of camber misalignment include worn ball joints, bent strut towers from collision damage, sagging springs, and worn control arm bushings.
Caster
Caster is the angle of the steering pivot when viewed from the side. It affects straight-line stability and steering return — the tendency of the steering wheel to return to center after a turn. Unequal caster between left and right sides causes the vehicle to pull toward the side with less positive caster. Caster issues are typically caused by collision damage, worn strut mounts, or frame shift. On many vehicles caster isn’t adjustable at all, which is exactly why measuring it matters: a caster reading that’s off on one side and not the other usually means something is bent rather than merely out of adjustment.
Toe
Toe is the most common alignment adjustment and the one that most directly affects tire wear. Toe refers to whether the front edges of the tires point inward (toe-in) or outward (toe-out) when viewed from above. It takes surprisingly little toe error to produce the feathered wear pattern you can feel by running a hand sideways across the tread — and once that pattern starts, it doesn’t reverse. Toe drifts over time as tie rod ends, steering components, and bushings wear.
Thrust Angle
On a 4-wheel alignment, we also measure and correct the thrust angle — the direction the rear axle points relative to the vehicle’s centerline. If the rear wheels aren’t tracking straight behind the front wheels, the vehicle “crab walks” down the road, which causes diagonal tire wear and affects steering feel. This is especially important on vehicles with independent rear suspension.
Front-End Alignment vs. 4-Wheel Alignment
A front-end alignment only adjusts the two front wheels. A 4-wheel alignment (also called all-wheel alignment) adjusts all four corners of the vehicle. At Derham’s, we perform 4-wheel alignments on every vehicle because even if only the front wheels are adjustable, we still need to measure the rear to calculate the thrust angle correctly. Adjusting the front without referencing the rear can result in a crooked steering wheel and diagonal tracking even though the front numbers look correct.
If your vehicle has independent rear suspension — which includes most modern sedans, crossovers, and SUVs — all four wheels are adjustable and all four need to be set. Trucks with solid rear axles typically only have front adjustments, but we still measure the rear to ensure the thrust angle is within specification.
When Do You Need an Alignment?
Your car pulls to one side. If you let go of the steering wheel on a flat, straight road and the vehicle drifts left or right, alignment is likely off. Note: a slight pull can also be caused by uneven tire pressure, road crown, or brake drag — we check for all of these before adjusting alignment.
Your steering wheel is crooked. If the steering wheel sits off-center when driving straight, the front toe or thrust angle needs correction.
Uneven tire wear. Wear on the inside edge, outside edge, or a feathered diagonal pattern across the tread all indicate specific alignment problems. We read the wear pattern to determine which angle is off before making adjustments.
After hitting a pothole or curb. A single hard impact can shift alignment angles, especially toe and camber. If the hit was hard enough to make a noise or jolt the steering, it’s worth a measurement even if the car still drives normally afterward.
After new tire installation. Installing new tires without checking alignment risks wearing them unevenly from mile one. We strongly recommend an alignment check with every new tire purchase.
After suspension or steering repair. Replacing struts, shocks, ball joints, tie rods, control arms, or springs changes the geometry of the suspension. Alignment must be checked and adjusted after any of these repairs.
Annually or every 12,000 miles. Even without obvious symptoms, alignment drifts over time from normal driving. An annual check catches problems before they cost you a set of tires.
Alignment & ADAS Calibration
If your vehicle has Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking — the cameras and sensors that power these features are aimed relative to the direction the vehicle actually travels. Change the alignment angles enough, particularly thrust angle or steering angle, and those sensors are no longer pointed where the system assumes they are.
Many manufacturers specify a calibration after alignment work on equipped vehicles. We can check what yours calls for, and because we offer ADAS calibration in-house, both jobs can be done in a single visit rather than sending you across town. Not every alignment shop is set up for this and many have to refer it out.
What Our Alignment Process Looks Like
Step 1: Pre-Alignment Inspection — Before we touch the alignment machine, we inspect your suspension and steering components. Adjusting alignment on worn parts is a waste of money because the angles won’t hold. If we find a worn ball joint, tie rod end, or bushing, we’ll let you know before proceeding.
Step 2: Digital Measurement — We mount precision sensors on all four wheels and measure camber, caster, toe, and thrust angle against your vehicle’s factory specifications. Our digital alignment equipment displays the measurements in real time so we can see exactly where each angle falls relative to spec.
Step 3: Adjustment — We make the necessary adjustments to bring each angle within the manufacturer’s target range. On vehicles with adjustable rear suspension, we set the rear first to establish the thrust angle, then adjust the front to match.
Step 4: Before-and-After Printout — You receive a printout showing the before and after measurements for every angle on all four wheels. This is your proof that the alignment was done correctly and a baseline for future checks.
Step 5: Road Test — We verify that the vehicle tracks straight, the steering wheel is centered, and there’s no pull or drift under driving conditions.
Why Alignment Matters for Tire Life
Think about what a toe error actually does. The tire isn’t rolling cleanly in the direction the car is moving — it’s being dragged slightly sideways the whole time, scrubbing rubber off on every foot of road. It’s a small amount per foot, but a car covers a lot of feet in a year, and none of that wear buys you anything.
That’s why we see sets of tires wear out well before their mileage rating on cars that otherwise look fine. An alignment costs a fraction of a set of tires, and it’s the difference between getting the mileage you paid for and replacing them early.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a wheel alignment cost in Wilmington NC?
Wheel alignments at Derham’s start at $89 for a 4-wheel alignment, and most vehicles are finished in under an hour. If suspension components need replacement before the alignment can hold, we provide a separate estimate for that work before going ahead. All alignment work is backed by our 12-month/12,000-mile guarantee.
How often should I get a wheel alignment?
We suggest an alignment check every 12,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. Get one sooner if you have hit a significant pothole or curb, installed new tires, or had any suspension or steering repair done.
What causes my car to pull to one side?
The most common cause is misalignment, usually unequal caster or toe between the left and right sides. But a pull can also come from uneven tire pressure, uneven tire wear, a dragging brake caliper, or a worn suspension component. We check all of those before adjusting alignment, so the fix matches the actual problem.
What is the difference between a front-end alignment and a 4-wheel alignment?
A front-end alignment adjusts only the two front wheels. A 4-wheel alignment measures and adjusts all four, including the thrust angle that determines whether the rear wheels track directly behind the front. We perform 4-wheel alignments on every vehicle, because adjusting the front without measuring the rear can leave you with a crooked steering wheel and diagonal tracking even when the front numbers look right.
Will an alignment fix a steering wheel that sits off-center?
Usually, yes. An off-center wheel on a car that otherwise drives straight is most often a toe setting split unevenly between the two front wheels, or a rear thrust angle the front was aimed against. Both are corrected on the rack. If the wheel is off-center and the car also pulls, we look at the suspension before assuming alignment alone will solve it.
Do I need an alignment after replacing struts or shocks?
Yes. Replacing struts, shocks, ball joints, tie rods, control arms or springs changes the geometry of the suspension. Alignment should be checked and adjusted after any of those repairs. Skipping it risks uneven tire wear and handling problems on parts you have just paid for.
Does wheel alignment affect tire life?
Considerably, in our experience. A toe error scrubs the tire sideways a little on every foot the car travels, and over thousands of miles that adds up to a great deal of tread lost to nothing but drag. It is a common reason a set of tires wears out well before its mileage rating on a car that otherwise looks fine.
Do I need ADAS calibration after a wheel alignment?
It depends on the vehicle and on what changed. Systems such as lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control reference the direction the vehicle actually travels, so a meaningful change to thrust angle or steering angle can leave the sensors aimed incorrectly. Many manufacturers specify calibration after alignment on equipped vehicles. We can check what yours calls for and perform the calibration in the same visit if it is needed.
Related Services
Alignment service frequently pairs with other work we do:
Suspension Work — Worn shocks, struts, ball joints, and bushings prevent alignment from holding. We inspect these before every alignment.
Tire Mounting & Balancing — New tire installation should always include an alignment check.
ADAS Calibration — Often specified after alignment on vehicles with driver-assist safety features.
Brake Repair & Replacement — Brake drag on one side can mimic an alignment pull. We check for this before adjusting angles.
NC State Inspections — Alignment-related tire wear can cause inspection failure if tread depth drops below legal minimum.
